Waligura Vacations-2005

This year was a little different for the Waligura vacations.  The boys decided that they wanted to go camping…so that’s what it was.  We did a camping trip locally at Ohiopyle State Park in June and then a trip out west to Coduras State Park (near York, PA) in August.

Both trips were a bunch of fun.  If you have not been camping in awhile, you really should go.  A weekend feels like a week.  A week feels like a month.  Yes, it does take a little extra effort in packing, setup and tear-down...well, ok, alot of extra effort, but is really worth it.  Our trip to Ohiopyle was supposed to coincide with a break in the Yankees T-ball schedule.  Unfortunately, that's not the way it worked out.  It turned out that we made the playoffs, and of course, we didn't know about it until we were actually camping.  Kind of put a damper on the "getting away from it all" theme of camping.  It turned out that we made an extra 3 trips downtown, 2 for T-ball games (one for gasoline...that's  a sore subject...why can't a service station be open past 8:00 on a Sunday in the middle of nowhere?).  Then I had to call the T-ball team parents and the league officers to let them know about the changes and try unsuccessfully to push our games to a later date.  That entailed driving to the highest point in the area to get cell phone reception (multiple times).   Ok..enough complaining.  We ended up rafting with all 3 of the boys, swimming in the river, biking on the Yough trail, we had some friends and Nanny up for a nice camp dinner and marshmallows/smores, and Cher & I got to hang out around the campfire every night.  There is nothing like a campfire to relax you and make you feel like one with nature.  Life is good.

Our camping trip out east at Coduras State Park was a journey...to say the least.  We did soooo much more than camp.  We arrived at the campsite to find that our little hitch-mounted carrying-thingee was a little too close to the exhaust...and we (or according to my wife..I) melted one of our coolers.  I argued that it wasn't my fault..and besides, that's why I brought 2 coolers.  We visited Hershey Park on 2 separate days..one was due to a rainout, which was OK, cause we visited The Hershey Chocolate Factory on the rain-out.  It wasn't to be our last rain day...little did we know.  We also got to rent a pontoon boat on the parks big lake...and had GREAT weather...got sunburned, and now we HAVE to have a boat.  What fun that was...everybody got to drive the boat..all of the kids.  We did a lot of spinning in circles for awhile there.  We did get too hit Hershey Park, rode the roller coasters and had great weather again.  On another rain day we got to visit one of Cher's old workmates...AND we got to spend time with an old friend of ours and his family in York, PA.  Unfortunately, all of the rain really put a damp-er on the nightly campfires...it also cut the vacation a day short.  It rained buckets, and I am not exaggerating.  We had to drain rain from the top of the tent tarp every 5 minutes.  We ended up packing up in the rain and heading home.  Actually after the first hour in the rain and mud, we actually didn't mind.  The boys had to sit in the van the entire time and really helped out by being patient and nice to one another.  Even with the rain...this vacation kicked butt.
